How’s Your Health & Safety Looking? A Quick Check for Small Businesses

Small business health and safety can feel particularly confusing.

You know there are things you need to have in place, but working out exactly what applies to your business isn’t always quite so straightforward.

Do you need a Health & Safety Policy? Are your risk assessments suitable? Is your Fire Risk Assessment up to date? What first aid arrangements do you need? And who is providing your competent Health & Safety support?

It’s very easy for the list to start growing.

So, rather than starting with paperwork, start with a few questions.

A quick Health & Safety check for your business

Have you got:

  • A Fire Risk Assessment?
  • A Health & Safety Policy?
  • Suitable risk assessments?
  • First aid arrangements?
  • Accident reporting arrangements?
  • Appropriate staff training and information?
  • Access to competent Health & Safety support?

Ticked them all?

Brilliant.

But that’s only part of the picture.

Having Health & Safety documents in place isn’t the end of it

A folder containing a policy and a collection of risk assessments doesn’t automatically mean your Health & Safety arrangements are suitable.

What you need will depend on your people, premises, the work you do and how you communicate.

A small office will have very different risks and requirements from an engineering workshop, warehouse, laboratory or business operating across several sites.

And businesses change. You employ more people. You move premises. You buy new equipment. Your processes change. Someone leaves and responsibilities move around.

Documents and arrangements that were suitable a few years ago may no longer reflect what’s happening now.

That’s why good Health & Safety management isn’t about collecting as much paperwork as possible.

It’s about understanding what applies to your business, making sure the right foundations are in place and checking that what’s written down reflects what happens in practice.

Not sure what Health & Safety support your business needs?

You don’t need to know which Health & Safety service you need before you contact SHE Does Safety.

Tell us what’s happening in your business, what you already have in place and where you’re unsure. We can help you work out what you need and where support would be useful.

For some businesses, that might mean a Health & Safety Review to take stock of their current arrangements, identify gaps and establish priorities.

For others, it might be support with a Fire Risk Assessment, risk assessments, Health & Safety Policy, workplace inspections or ongoing Competent Person support.

And sometimes, you might just need to ask a question.
